REALLY Apply those 4 D’s, Day 2 – Part 9 in a a Series – Email Mgmt for Educators

Hello everyone!  Now, here’s the big question, did you try out the 4 D’s?   


Part 9 of our series focuses on those 4 D’s.  You may have been too busy or too tired or a million other things and I bet those are all very true but to make this work, you have to at least give this plan a shot.  So, take a moment and try applying the 4 D’s to your email:  Do It, Defer It, Delegate It, Delete it.

I want you to know that I gave it a shot today and was amazed at how much sense it made.  I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t get through all of my backlog or inbox but I did make great progress and I have that awesome feeling of having made good progress towards the goal.  If you really don’t have the time, at least try the 4 D’s with 5 emails.  Right now, just go to your inbox and sort your top 5 emails using the 5 D’s.  Let me know how it worked for you.

I’m actually excited about continuing the process! 

So, Part 9 of our series is to continue with the 4 D’s to clean up your Inbox and Backlog folder, if you have one.

Don’t worry if you don’t make it through the whole thing.  I sure didn’t.  Just start the journey with those 5 emails.  It’s funny how good it feels to take care of it!  And, please share by commenting on your progress.

On another note, I have to share how happy I am with the results at my campus.  I am proud to say that I’m getting emails back with excellent subject lines and (EOM) used to indicate there is no need to open the message.  Now, I’m lucky to work with an exceptional group of individuals but there’s no doubt that modeling has made some difference.  I thank those great folks at my campus for their dedication and willingness to give this a shot!

Carol Mortensen has nearly twenty-three years of educational experience. She began as a substitute teacher as she worked toward her degree. Upon graduation, Carol began teaching middle school Math and Algebra I and served as the technology liaison for her campus. She served as a teacher for 16 years and was lucky to have taught at Hillcrest Middle School, a 1:1 campus where every student was issued a laptop computer. In addition, Carol is an online Math instructor for Aventa Learning and K12. The Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) named Carol the Classroom Teacher of the Year for her innovative and creative use of technology to create a 24/7 virtual classroom using her classroom website. Carol has presented at school districts throughout Texas as well as state and local conferences on a variety of technology integration topics. Her article on the use of websites as an instructional tool was recently published in the TechEdge Magazine. In February 2011, her article, Lessons Learning In a 1:1 Classroom, was published by TechEdge. The article was republished in ISTE’s Learning and Leading magazine in August 2011. She was named Fairmont Junior High’s Teacher of the Year for the 2011-2012 school year. Carol is passionate about the positive impact that technology has on student achievement. Her presentations are packed with real-life solutions, quality resources, and humor. She has an ability to connect with her audience and motivate them to take technology integration to a higher quality level.
