Back to OneNote and Still Using EverNote: Maybe That’s The Way It Should Be?

Fish with Help Sign(1)

As you know if you’ve read my blog, I find myself moving back and forth between OneNote and Evernote.  OneNote has the best interface by far in my opinion.  It’s sleek, easy to organize, and easy to work with.  With Skydrive, keeping it available whereever I am is no problem.  Evernote, on the other hand, automatically syncs folders I want it to and has the cool feature of the audio notes which I use for so much more than audio notes. I remain…confused….Which will I end up with?  I wish Evernote looked like OneNote and then there would be no question.  But, it doesn’t..alas…I find it’s interface cumbersome and, well, boring. OneNote is the app I open on my iPad and people want to know what it is because it looks so cool!  It’s fun to work in.

What to do?  What to do?   Tell me, Dear Readers, which is your favorite? Or, is there perhaps another one that I should investigate out there?

5 New Tech Jewels I REALLY Discovered This Week

diamondI have shared apps and websites here that looked great for education but I want to share some of those again, and some new ones, that I REALLY discovered and used with a class or myself and found to be fantastic!  These are worth checking out!

Socrative

I’ve read so much about it but this time, I actually used it with a class and I’m blown away by the capabilities of the program.Strengths:

  • Perfect for BYOT/BYOD
  • SpaceRace is a BLAST!
  • Sends results/reports to teacher of activities.
  • Free!

Weaknesses:

  • Can’t think of any
Class Dojo

What a great way to manage classrooms and keep excellent, real-time records of the behaviors and activities in your class.

Strengths:

  • Sends automatic weekly reports to parents
  • Provides excellent record-keeping for your own classroom management needs

Weaknesses:

  • If displaying class, what about privacy concerns for students?

MyScript Calculator

Just take a look at this amazing app.  There’s a Google Play and Apple App for it and the handwriting recognition is excellent.

Strengths:

  • Easy to use
  • Cool to use
  • Able to handle pretty complex formulas and operations
  • Free

Weaknesses:

  • A little learning curve for more complex operations
  • Important to clear screen (just like a calculator) before entering new calculation

Use Your Handwriting- Apple App

You have to use this to see how fluid the handwriting is with this.  It’s actually fun to write the sentences and the iPad enhances the experience.  Just send your list to yourself when you are done to use your list anywhere!

Strengths:

  • Fun to use
  • Great looking results
  • Can share to Facebook, Twitter, Images, or email
  • Great colors and neon look
  • Free

Weaknesses:

  • Only that the handwriting is all it does!  But, then again, that’s what this app is intended to do!

Cooliris

I’ve used Cooliris as a Firefox Add-on and it is great!  It’s a great way to work with your photos on your computer or do searches and sharing activities.  But, now, it’s available on the iPhone and iPad and offers the same cool features.  It has a great chat feature, as well.  It’s just a great way to search images.

Strengths:

  • Easy to Use
  • Beautiful Display
  • Easy to share and discuss with friends and a group you designate
  • Super great for searching Google Images
  • Share to social networks easily
  • Search social network photos easily
  • Free

Weaknesses:

  • Only searches Google images
  • Limited number of social network sharing

Mailstrom – Inbox Zero At Its Best

Today, I discovered Mailstrom!  Mailstrom takes inbox organization to a new level, is free right now, and gets you quickly to the ultimate goal of inbox zero!  Imagine having your inbox at zero…just imagine!

It’s a very easy process.  Simply go their site and enter your email address.  Enter a few more details and mailstrom begins separating your email so that you can look at it like you want to.  For instance, you can look at by time frame (age), subject, sender, Social, and Shopping.  But, my very favorite is Lists.  With Lists, you can instantly unsubscribe from those annoying subscriptions you wonder how you got yourself into AND delete the emails all in one click!

For the other views, you have the option of archiving collections of similar items, deleting them, or moving them to another folder.  You can even create a rule that will be followed when similar emails arrive in the future.

Now, when I say deleting, I don’t mean that you have 500 emails and you have to delete 50 at a time…I mean, delete…all at once…one click….same with archive and move.  Huge timesaver!

By the way, while Mailstrom is organizing one mailbox, you can add others (Gmail and iMap) and then you can clean them all up.

Another plus was that it unsubscribed me using the correct subscriber email automatically. I didn’t have to type it in.  It automatically switched to the correct one for the unsubscription process!

Seriously, run, don’t walk to Mailstrom and try out this fantastic program.  I cancelled Sane Box immediately and believe I will be using Mailstrom for my email organization needs!  LOVE IT!

Symbaloo’s New Interface – Looks Amazing

I was so excited to read about Symbaloo’s New Interface.  I have long expressed my concern with the fact that my tabs across the top of the screen are unmanageable. It looks like Symbaloo listened and is addressing that problem along with a host of new options and improvements.

The first improvement is an expandable side bar.  In the side bar, there will be the ability to switch between tabs to get to all your webmixes.  When you have over 80 and growing, that means a great deal.  Clicking on a webmix will open up a tab and your webmix.  Brilliant!

It looks like you will be able to handle your settings and other administrative responsibilities. From the graphics displayed on the Symbaloo website, you can also customize the wallpaper and tiles to the sidebar settings. I also see a button to upload images which means that your customization can be even more personalized. From the educator’s standpoint, this kind of personalization allows you to connect educational webmixes to their content visually.

Another feature of the sidebar appears to be a search bar that will let you search for tiles and webmixes from the gallery. This is a great way to collaborate with other Symbaloo users and to share webmixes.

Thank you, Symbaloo, for listening to our comments. I, for one, cannot wait to start using the new interface as it appears it will streamline my use of Symbaloo.

We’ve moved to our new home on Edublogs

I would sure like to thank everyone for their patience while MyWeb4Ed.com moved to Edublogs.  We are now in our new home but we have some tweaking left to do.  You will find that some of the images didn’t make it with the blog and we are in the process of reattaching those and fixing any links.

We are really excited about our new home!  I think Edublogs and MyWeb4Ed are bound to be a good match.  If you haven’t checked out Edublogs at www.edublogs.com, I’d recommend you do so!  What a great way to communicate with students about what is happening in your classroom and involve them in blogging themselves!
